10 Self Care Approaches for Moms

Hey Mommas! This post is going to be about self care. How you can start taking initiative to care for you mind and body starting today! I have so many ways of caring for myself but these 10 Self-care approaches are my top!

Please don’t tell yourself self-care is hard, because self-care is not all going to a fancy spa or a restaurant to treat yourself. You can practice self care at home with very simple methods.

LET’S GET STARTED.

UNPLUG from all your DEVICES. Keep your phone line open off course!

Unplug from Social Media, WIFI, Internet etc!

We all know how much our world has transformed over the last decade. Our life suddenly became overly dependent on Social Media, The Internet and Gadgets!

‘Internet Detox” is a huge mental boost. It releases toxins from your mind and lets your brain heal.

POWER NAP or REST

Put your feet up and close your eyes

When you rest or give your eyes a rest, your body is in a relaxed state. Your brain pauses for some time and heals. When your brain heals, your body rests and it also heals.

Power naps are a short sleep taken during the day in order to restore one’s mental alertness.

I am a huge advocate of Power Naps i try to take advantage of a power nam whenever my kids are at local classes, grandma or a friend’s house.

That may be 15 minutes to 1 hour depending on how long they do not fuss in their naps!

But let me assure you even those 15 minutes of nap is an absolute BLISS. Pure BLISS.

It makes me feel refreshed, more alert and ready to tackle the rest of the day.

Get Fresh Air

According to the EPA, our indoor environment is two to five times more toxic than our outdoor environment.

And this can have an impact on how our body and mind reacts to the toxins we are exposed to.

Opening the windows to let Fresh Air in every day is important as well as taking a walk in Fresh Air!

Be it cold or hot, the air outside has benefits for our mind, body, and soul.

Here is a list of benefits of getting some fresh air in your system:

Improves your blood pressure and heart rate

Strengthens your immune system.

Fresh air cleanses your lungs as you breathe in fresh oxygen and release the toxins from your body

More energy and sharper mind because the brain needs 20 percent oxygen to function at its’ best. Taking a walk in fresh air increases your heart beat and blood pressure and is pumps oxygen to your brain.

Fresh air oxygen more clarity to the brain, improves concentration, helps to think clearly and be more alert.

READING for me is FOOD FOR THOUGHT, It is like fuel for my brain and satisfaction in my heart.

As Dr. Seuss says,

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Diving into a good book opens up a whole world of knowledge starting from a very young age.

Reading a good book opens up a whole world of possibilities. You can live a thousand lives through a book.

I personally love reading Self-help Books these days.

My current read is Daring Greatly by Brene Brown

READ ANYTHING YOU WANT. But make sure the book you read is always beneficial to your soul and mind!

Create/Pick a new hobby/activity!

Make or create something you enjoy. You may or may not think you are creative enough to make something out of your hands. But you don’t need to be a crafter or an artist to create something to make yourself happy.

For me personally, creating a hand drawn planner page for a month is being creative. It gives me joy and pleasure to be able to design it and use it for myself.

Getting busy in creating or any activity is fuel to your brain. Alzheimer’s patients are always encouraged to pick a new hobby or learn a new language to keep their brain cells from losing memory. There is a Good reason why that has so much positive benefits!

  • You can write in a journal and make some doodles! Write about your day and goals
  • Draw a flower, nature or your dream home in a sketch book!
  • Get an Adult Colouring Book and a box of crayons and get colouring!
  • Sew something by hand if you don’t own a sewing machine.
  • Go on Paint nights with a few friends.
  • Take a Kickboxing class or a yoga class!
  • Get your hands wet and take a Pottery class. (I did and loved it)

 

TAKE YOUR VITAMINS

As a Mom I don’t always remember to eat a nutritious meal. So I make sure I take my multivitamins to fill that gap

EAT fruits and veggies

Vegetables are sources of many nutrients, including potassium, dietary fiber, folate (folic acid), vitamin A, and vitamin C.

They are low in calorie too!

Whenever I feel like my day is going to be long and tiring, I pull out my Blender and make a deliciously

balanced Smoothie drink with fruits and vegetables.

♥ One of my go to Smoothie recipe is ♥

  1. 1 ripe banana
  2. A handful of baby spinach
  3. half of a ripened Avocado
  4. 1 teaspoon Chia Seeds
  5. One cup Milk or Yogurt (if yogurt then add some water)
  6. A tablespoon raw honey

It’s a wonderfully balanced Morning Smoothie to wake me up and get going.

If you don’t get enough time to cook or prepare your vegetables, buy a salad bowl from grocery. I buy big packs of Salads from Costco and add it as a side dish to my meals.

PAMPER

I get a deep tissue massage at least once a month from my favourite Spa in Downtown, Toronto.

It helps me unwind. It helps my body release the toxins which build up and cause extra body aches and stress.

Massages are super beneficial for you. Those tight tensed muscles will thank you.

FOOT MASSAGES are another excellent Stress relief treatment!! Our foot has all the hidden points to trigger our body parts which may need to release

harmful toxins.

FACIALS are luxUry for your mind and the most visible part of your body!

When your skin Glows you feel wonderful and it can have a lasting impact.

JOURNALING

A JOURNAL to write about your day, feelings, emotions, goals or plans can bring an astonishing state of peacefulness to your mind.

Reflecting on your thoughts and seeing it written helps to understand our own self whom we often neglect.

Journaling and doodling are my favourite self-care activity.

There are many types of Journaling you can do. Starting from making your own journal to buying a fancy one.

There is Bullet Journaling too!

There are Journal prompts that come in store-bought journals nowadays to help people get into their own brain!

Such as this one right here.

PRAY

It may be the last on my list today but it is certainly the MOST POWERFUL of them all.

At least for me.

Prayers

  • Bring the most utmost PEACE in your heart.
  • Are DIRECTLY speaking to GOD
  • Make us mindful of our actions and deeds, therefore taking better care of ourselves.

I also find solace and healing in listening to the Quran and lecture from Renowned Islamic Scholars.

They remind me why Allah created me and what is my purpose in this world.

A form of prayer is also remembering Allah through Dhikr. Dhikr is constantly keeping yourself reminded of the existence of Divine power.
